Skincare Diary, March 2019: What I’ve been using this winter

The plan for my ‘skincare diaries’ was to make a series of skincare routines exploring my ‘skincare wardrobe’ but after a few drafts of this post, I realised that I don’t have a wardrobe big enough to warrant trying to explore it. Especially now that my wardrobe has gone through a bit of a cull, there are even fewer items there to put into multiple posts. So, in reality, this is just a regular annual routine post that I tend to do just before I run out of everything and overhaul it again…

This routine today is the one I’ve mostly stuck to throughout the winter, when my skin needs extra care and I take out more products than usual. Even then, there isn’t that much compared to previous years.

First off, I’ve finally run low on my bottle of Soap and Glory’s Peaches and Clean Cleanser. After two bottles and a bit (I left my second bottle in Vietnam…) I’m not repurchasing it again just so I can go back to exploring more cleanser options. In the meantime, that means I’ve moved into a full-time commitment to Glossier’s Milky Jelly Cleanser as my morning/second cleanser – mine is running low but I have a backup on the way. It’ll be my new failsafe in case a new option goes wrong. I really want to try some stick cleansers this year.

I featured Etude House’s Moistfull Collagen Emulsion like, last year and you can sort of see how much I’ve used since!! I think I still have a month or so left of it if I use it daily (which I don’t…), but I’m excited to finally finish it. I’ve been using it as my morning moisturiser and as a mixer for my Double Wear foundation when I want less full coverage and matte finish.

I recently finally ran out of my Kose Suncut UV sunscreen, so out came the Biore 2017 Watery Essence which is actually also half-finished. I need to use up the Milk versions but I haven’t been into matte finishes lately so they haven’t been getting any use at all. Actually, I’ve been REALLY bad with using sunscreen at all this winter… I’m not sure what sunscreen to try next so if you have any suggestions, please do let me know!

I use the Simple SOS Clearing Booster as the first step after cleansing in the morning. I’m not seeing any real difference from using this but I like the cooling gel texture which is completely non-irritating to me, so I’ll use it up but not repurchase it.

As my morning lip balm if my lips aren’t too flaky or irritated, I use a thinner lip balm – either the Skinfood Avocado and Honey Lip Serum or the Dr Organic Rose Otto Lip Balm Serum. I’ll be doing a fuller review of the latter at some point so do keep an eye out for that. If my lips are not in great condition, I’ll use the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask instead, as an emergency measure, before buffing my lips when I take it off.

In the evening, I use Muji’s Oil Cleanser only if I have been wearing a full face of makeup. this takes it off nicely and quickly without stinging the eyes but does make my vision cloudy when I use it for eye makeup. Otherwise, I like this a lot.

For spot treatment I use the Acnecide Benzoyl Peroxide you can get through the Superdrug Pharmacy, which is easier for me than picking up Duac (Benzoyl Peroxide and Clindamycin) through my GP even though I find Duac more effective of all the treatments I’ve tried. Acnecide gets rid of the forehead clogs and whiteheads but I still find that a couple escape into the open anyway and it doesn’t help with big, deep-rooted spots as far as I can tell – those take ages to heal up anyway.

For my two lighter moisturisers I use the Hada Labo Premium Emulsion and then the Holika Holika Good Cera Emulsion. As you might be able to tell, I love the emulsion type category as it’s just what my skin needs, most days. I can be a little careless with throwing those on but heavier creams are where I need to be careful in case I break out. I have been especially loving the Hada Labo Premium, and I even use it as a thin layer on the outer lips before layering lip balms and masks. I always need to layer something on top of it though as I often feel it’s not substantial enough by itself, but it really is great underneath something else.

Lastly, I remember I mentioned the Lanolips 101 ointment being kind of mediocre in effect but much better layered under something else, and at the moment I actually like it as a nose balm. My nose is constantly dry and this helps quite a bit.

The Rosette Ceramide Gel is now discontinued – you can see my previous post here with my sad lament about it – but it’s a heavier gel cream my face can actually tolerate and really loves.

As an eye cream, I’ve been using the Missha E Hyeon Jin Bon Eye Cream, which is light and super pleasant to use, but lightly fragranced if that’s not your thing. It comes in a really lovely glass pot which feels weighty and really nice. It’s a super affordable product too so if you want a bit of luxe without the cost this is a good pick.

That’s everything I’ve been using this winter!! Let me know what you’ve been loving recently!

Until next time,
