[Chattery Review]: Clinique Pop Lip Colour + Primer – Cherry Pop

Hi everyone!

As I began to type this it was actually the beginning of the month. I know, I know… the new month and thus the new rotation of lipsticks has only just begun its course and here I am with a rave. I guess this makeup challenge is doing its job of making me fall in love with my collection all over again.

Then I left this post to simmer on the back burner of my drafts for a little, though. It was either this or a Valentine’s post, which was going to be a rant about being single until suddenly I sort of was not single which threw me into a panic. Excuse me while I turn into a sappy floof for a bit. I know I said ‘New Year, New Swanna’ to everyone but this new curveball is a bit too much. My heart can’t take it. Too much floof.

Back to one of my true loves, lipstick. Speaking of falling in love with my collection, did I update you on Rikugien? I woke up one morning and felt that it was just the right colour for what I wanted that day – a low-key, non-drying lip for a full workday. As in, I am reaching for the colour without feeling like it’s a hassle.

Anyway, this was just supposed to be just a chatter post and unorganised rave, but I may as well add a few more structured points for a more complete review.

Luxurious yet weightless formula merges bold, saturated colour with a smoothing primer. Glides on effortlessly to give a modern-velvet finish. Colour stays true and keeps lips comfortably moisturised for 8 hours. Allergy Tested. 100% Fragrance Free. (Clinique Website)

I remember Clinique’s Pop Lip Colour & Primer in Cherry Pop was available as a free mini with a copy of Cosmo… or was it Glamour? Either way, it meant that every blogger and their mate ended up with a blog post about it which is why I never felt the need to mention it.

The product comes in a sleek and colourful packaging that, in this case, always manages to photograph as a bright red. I think for a long time I also felt the colour was reddish but have finally let go of that description for what it really is. Vivid, vivid pink.

The lipstick itself has a creme finish (I wouldn’t call it demi-matte at all…). It’s not shimmery but still has a healthy shine to it, and the colour is really vivid and bright. I like to apply it boldly to my inner lips and cupid’s bow and use a lip brush to apply it more carefully to my outer lips.

But the real reason this is a winner for me is the lasting power. I applied it at about 9am, before I left the house for university, and forgot I was wearing a bright pink lipstick (as opposed to a nude). It’s really lightweight.

When I finally remembered to check up on it, five hours later, it had faded noticeably, but not embarrassingly. It had left a vivid and very even stain that wouldn’t come off unless you ate something greasy or cleansed your lips properly. Basically, unless you are very meticulous about how perfect your lipstick looks, it looked the same. On top of that, after five hours it had only lost the creamy texture of the lipstick and felt a little drying.

A few pointers that I wanted to demonstrate with this lip swatch… I really like how it adds a little more fullness to my (already admittedly full) lips somehow. It’s also not completely opaque as you can see that it doesn’t cover my lip marks.

I like to apply it heavily in the centre of the lip, then use a brush to outline my lips properly before applying a final layer. I have found that the colour can bleed a tiny bit if you apply directly from the bullet straight to the edge of the lip, but if applied with a brush it won’t bleed at all.

I went and bought a mini set of four different Pop Lips on Boxing Day, which are now in my Withheld Box, all queued up ready for a blog post much, much later this year. The set included another Cherry Pop so it looks like I don’t have to fear being without this colour anymore. The full size of this lipstick is £16.50.

Long story short, this stuff is perfection in a tube of vivid pink. Wear it and conquer the world.

Until next time,

Days since I last bought lipstick: 51

  1. How gorgeous are your lips?! The color is so pretty and when reading lipstick reviews I’m always on the lookout for info about the staying power and how evenly it stains. No time for uneven smudges haha…
